Stewardship is a
concept that permeates the whole Bible. It is the call that originates in the
act of creation. God created us in His image, to live in a relationship with
Him, with our neighbors, with ourselves and with the environment. (Gen 1:26-27)
In His love and generosity, God entrusted the creation to humanity. Stewardship
reminds us that it is our responsibility to respond to this trust and love. Through
the separation from God, humanity lost its ability to live up to this call. At Calvary,
Jesus Christ redeemed us through His sacrifice in order to lead us back to the
relationship with Him and with the created world. Trust was restored.
Trust and Commitment
The home of the first human family was a garden, a protected space, unique in its beauty. In order to be a perfect place for meaning and happiness, God told them to keep and to care for the Garden of Eden. (Gen 2) In response to His wisdom, we preserve/protect the living space entrusted to us.
Trust and Service
Jesus modeled to us a life of selfless and loving service. He took every opportunity to encourage, to protect, to heal and to liberate others. He even gave his life so that we can live. In response to His sacrifice, we follow him and use our gifts, talents and time to serve others.
Trust and Giving - Tithe
To love means to give – these two cannot be separated. God is generous. He gives because He loves. (John 3:16) In giving His only son, He expressed His ultimate love towards humanity. In response to His love, we return our tithe and give offerings.
Trust and Priorities
Jesus told his disciples to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and what they need for their daily life will be given to them. (Mt 6:33). By setting our priorities right, stewardship reaches into every dimension of our lives. In response to Jesus advice, we value what really matters.
